Atiyeh lost her husband during the missile attacks on 5 March 2026, while he was at his workplace. Since then, she has become the sole caregiver for her three young children: a seven-year-old son, a four-year-old daughter, and a three-year-old son, all of whom are now growing up without their father.

Before the conflict, Atiyeh was a homemaker, and her husband was the family’s only source of income. To meet the growing costs of rent and daily living expenses, he worked multiple jobs in an effort to provide for his wife and children. His death not only deprived the family of its primary breadwinner but also left them facing severe financial hardship.

In addition to the ongoing costs of housing and basic necessities, the family was left with outstanding debts, including loan repayments that have remained overdue since his death. Without a stable source of income, Atiyeh now bears the full responsibility of supporting her three young children while struggling to meet even their most essential needs.

Unable to afford the rising cost of living and rent, the family was forced to leave their home and relocate to a nearby rural area in an effort to reduce their living expenses. While this move provided temporary financial relief, it also limited their access to services, opportunities, and the social support they had previously relied upon.

Atiyeh’s story illustrates how armed conflict continues to affect civilian families long after the violence has ended. Beyond the tragic loss of life, the death of a family’s sole breadwinner can push women and young children into prolonged poverty, economic insecurity, and an uncertain future.

This family is among the conflict-affected households identified through HAMI’s field assessments and needs-based vulnerability screening. Following individual case assessment, they were enrolled in HAMI’s humanitarian assistance programme, through which part of their urgent livelihood and humanitarian needs has been addressed with the support of humanitarian partners and donors
